What can I say, we can’t help it. Our revolutionary genes kicked in yet again in 2024. Rulez have been broken and oldish content was covered with abandon. Well, the sinning wasn’t quite that severe. But the selection of Blasts from the Past is kinda juicy nonetheless, ranging from Prog geekery to brvtish metallic wiolence. The kind of thing that will keep you entertained and your hackles up at the same time.

2024 was a difficult year at first. It started very slow and apart from a few forlorn underground pieces, there wasn’t much that struck the fancy of the old geezers over at the RMR Review Desk. So, how were we ever going to field a genuine Top 10 series with no good material to show for? But fear naught, by late spring the crop started showing some promising results. And – boy – the harvest took a somber turn with many a malevolent piece hitting the desk of the surly Guardian ov the Review Pipe.

Okay. We already screwed up with a prog piece in 2023. And this was Haken’s Fauna. For some reason, the album got lost in translation and was only rediscovered in early 2024. To our chagrin, this album turned out to be a pretty snazzy masterpiece that would have made it onto the Top 10 list. Would. Could. Should. Right?

The new Opeth record is still some 60 days away and Mastodon are only musing about writing a new one. But right now, we hunger for some feisty and heavy progressive soundbites heading our way. Specifically, since one Mikael Åkerfeldt1 decided to reintroduce growls in his future prog release. Luckily, the Canadians from Anciients were ready to step in for about a month now.
