Beriedir – Liminal Spaces (2025) – Review

It is true. Progressive Metal was in short supply on the RMR zine in 2024. And this resulted in a roster far too dark and ominous for its own good. Don’t believe me? Our Top 10 can bear witness to this. That’s not to say that we didn’t enjoy any juicy hits in the prog department. But all of those were rather scarce to begin with.

So, why not start 2025 with a neat hammer blow of a prog record? And for this, we won’t have to look further than the beautiful countryside of Italy. Bergamo’s Beriedir manifested themselves with … [...] Click to raid more!

Opeth – The Last Will and Testament (2024) – Review

Opeth - The Last Will and Testament - Album Cover

Okay. We already screwed up with a prog piece in 2023. And this was Haken’s Fauna. For some reason, the album got lost in translation and was only rediscovered in early 2024. To our chagrin, this album turned out to be a pretty snazzy masterpiece that would have made it onto the Top 10 list. Would. Could. Should. Right?

And that is where Blighted Eye strut onto the scene like the bright green Cookie Monster. I’m hearing, Agony’s Bespoke rides into battle on the tale of Clare, a deported convict violently abused by Australian settlers, as described in the 2018 movie ‘The Nightingale’. And to transform these brutal moving pictures into an Extreme Metal piece definitely turns this slightly nauseating tale into a damned great storyline. Thus as the lore goes, … [...] Click to raid more!

Anciients – Beyond The Reach of the Sun (2024) – Review

Anciients - Beyond The Reach of the Sun - Album Cover

The new Opeth record is still some 60 days away and Mastodon are only musing about writing a new one. But right now, we hunger for some feisty and heavy progressive soundbites heading our way. Specifically, since one Mikael Åkerfeldt1 decided to reintroduce growls in his future prog release. Luckily, the Canadians from Anciients were ready to step in for about a month now. And they got heavy written into their DNA. In spades.

Anciients is yet another band valiantly sailing right past us back in 2016. So, some eight years later we’d all but forgotten about them. It … [...] Click to raid more!
