The Reticent is known to wallow deeply in the rough seas of mental disturbances. Already, On The Eve of a Goodbye got us a taste of suicidal urges brought to fruition and the aftermath experienced by those left with the living. The Oubliette broke the news about Alzheimer’s in intricate detail. And I could relate to that, given that I have been relentlessly exposed to both issues. Not first hand, mind you. I wouldn’t be writing reviews, else. But close enough to get a real taste of the inner workings of them.

The Reticent likes themes. Big, thorny themes. And even larger emotions, about problems and issues that not many musicians like to tackle.

After all, there’s no mainstream or glittery fame to gain in all this. No snazzy rockstar perks beckon you just around the corner. Just hard, emotionally draining music creation that peddles to a decidedly limited audience.

In 2016, The Reticent issued one of the best – if not THE best – Progressive Metal album of the year called On the Eve of a Goodbye. And I am not saying this lightly.

The emotional discharge, genuine passion, and musical prowess are such that the record ended up on spot number two of the 2016 Top Ten Records in the RMR universe. And the record still rocks a lot on the RMR mighty sound machine. So much so that the tear-drenched tune risks rusting the metal it is built on.

I love Progressive Metal. This is where metal meets the grey unknown. Far, far away from the ‘established’ legions of bands. Those that seemingly always want to produce more of the same. 

Of course, Progressive Metal covers lots of sins and it takes a lot of musical skills to produce good content. On the other hand, the style is usually also an indicator of much creative energy at work. Of that urge to go the extra mile.
