Nightwish came a long way since they started their endeavor in 1996. The band around Tuomas Holopainen truly was with the pioneers of what was to become Symphonic Metal. Their fulminant career didn’t come without their hiccups, though. First, the somewhat messy divorce from Tarja Turunen made headlines across the mainstream metal press. Anette Olzon didn’t fare much better after a couple of thunderous records or so. And that left the band – rightly or wrongly – with a bad rap.

The RMR crew was a bit reticent to entertain the idea of yet another Doom Metal piece on RMR’s roster this year. When your Death Metal sounds Rogga-ish, there must be some truth to it. And sure enough, Thorium‘s new piece The Bastard does include one Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, et al) as the main guitarist. Sometimes I cannot fathom how this man can stuff so much work into his 24 hours of waketime without adding the night to it. After all, he’s got a gazillion bands to attend to, plus some loving attention to fans and friends. AND we will for sure hear from him later in the year all over again.
