Ah, the things we miss sometimes in the course of a year, and then rediscover them. Just when I should be madly writing the 2017 Top 10 to finalize the last months and move on to bigger and better things in the new year.

The tidbits of sound, slightly unhinged and never straight. Hints of madness and bedlam in tatters. Mad screaming, rusty guitar sounds embedded in wet, scratchy metal. Bleak winds and an icy cold live outside of the RMR offices. A snowstorm from the East is being delivered right now and the temperature drops rapidly towards absolute numbers. At least that is what this feels like these days. And I don’t even live in the frozen tundra of Siberia, even if it feels like it. This is supposed to be temperate over here. The avalanche of new music and – for sure – new styles that became available in the ’70s and ’80s, to the early ’90s was absolutely tremendous. Metal found itself strongly on the upswing from the early ’80s onwards. Whereas Hard Rock already started to lose a lot of its shiny luster by this time.

Many of today’s well-known metal genres were in full development mode back then. This led to this crazy and fragmented metal multiverse we (do not quite) enjoy today.

Do you like spelunking? Fancy mystical landscapes gorging with ancient lore and accounts of witches? Then you need to visit Muotathal somewhere in nowhere-land in Switzerland. The region is home to the famous Hölloch, a world-renowned cave system of a couple of hundred klicks in length.

Sometimes the goofy Swiss really knock themselves out. Wikipedia indicates the cave to be 200.4 kilometers in length, which should elevate whoever wrote that sentence to dork nirvana on a world stage of wannabe dorks.
