RockmusicRaider Review - Epica - The Holographic Principle - Album Cover

Epica are known for their penchant towards super-epic, somewhat overstuffed and choir-heavy productions. Starting as a Symphonic and Gothic Metal outfit with the astonishing The Phantom Agony, the band slowly evolved towards an orchestral laden, bombastic style that left many of their earlier fans confused in their wake.

Over the last years we have seen many of the major players in this genre move into a similar – if not the same – direction. Which means that what should be innovation turns out to be the new mainstream of sorts. It is a little like this drive to political [...] Click to raid more!

Delain – Moonbathers (2016) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Delain - Moonbathers - Album CoverI’ll be damned, time flies really fast. It is already ten years and five full length albums down the road for the Dutch Symphonic and Gothic Metal band Delain. Now crowned with their latest record Moonbathers

Already their very first album Lucidity impressed me greatly. To find a debut of an unknown band at such a level of professionalism was astounding. The whole record exuded a freshness and carefree attitude that – sadly – started lacking on future albums.

The fact that the ever cute Charlotte Wessels (Delain) is the female front on this project really piqued my interest right away. Not because she is cute of course. But because she can sing and is one of the most respected professionals in the genre.

Interestingly, the project actually features three core band members. The remaining two: Georg Neuhauser (Serenity) [...] Click to raid more!

Epica – Design Your Universe (2009) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Epica - Design Your Universe - Album CoverWell, is it better than the other records or is it not? After Consign to Oblivion I grew a bit wary of what I was going to find in this Pandora’s box that this band usually delivers. Much to my relief, Epica‘s fourth studio album Design Your Universe is probably one of the better records – previous and past. It kind of sounds like a mix between Delain, Within Temptation and Nightwish fueled by top quality vitamins. They actually quite shamelessly erred on the latter’s territory.

But seriously, this is probably one of the most authentic and complex [...] Click to raid more!
