Video: Holy Diver Unplugged on Deep Dark River!

RockmusicRaider Video - Deep Dark River 2018Who remembers the priest in chains flung into the roaring sea by the daemon? I do for sure. These were the times when Heavy Metal got an uplift and Holy Diver emerged. A record that – incidentally – also appeared on our first installment of the Old’n’Tasty series. Delivered by a crystal clear voice and ending up as a classic after so many years. Dio really took off with that record and the track that went with it.

Deep Dark River run by Morgan Rider (SIG:AR:TYR, Vesperia) just released this tasty cover of the track Holy Diver. As an acoustic, unplugged version, no less. And delivered in a somewhat solemn, wayward fashion by Rider and in a way that has been quite unheard of to this date.

Deep Dark River already produced a number of covers, the most notable one being Allure of the Earth by Woods of Ypres. The band plans to unchain a full length record later in 2018 with all original material. We can’t wait to discover what they will get us. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Old’n’Tasty Records @ RockmusicRaider – Vol. I

RockmusicRaider - Old n Tasty - Old Rock and Metal of all kindsDid you know that RockmusicRaider covered many old(er) Rock and Metal records over time? No? We did. And will continue – as time allows – to add more to this specific endeavour.

The performance of bands in the ’70s and ’80s brought about some absolute classics that many enjoy to this day. Be it now in a Progressive Rock arena or the early stages of Heavy Metal or any other sub-genre for that matter. All of these bands contributed to the musical soundscape we find ourselves in today.

And to top all this, whilst all of the original band members start to get kinda old, many of them are still alive and kicking. And – they continue to make great music. But not only that. Their fame is such that some made it onto the 10 Most Popular Posts @ RockmusicRaider. And this for records way older than 40 years or so. So talk about an absolutely amazing reach. Let’s step in and find out what has been old’n’tasty lately at the RMR offices. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Dio – Holy Diver (1983) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Dio - Holy Diver - Album CoverWhen – in 1982 – Ronnie James Dio defected from Black Sabbath and got his own band in a tearing hurry, we were all kind of scratching our heads. Not knowing where this was all going to end. Of course also counting the fact that Vinnie Appice took off with him on this flight from the witches. The vapors surrounding their somewhat abrupt departure were pregnant with disconsolate news. About infights at Black Sabbath, all about power and who should be calling the shots. And am I not surprised: The alpha-males assembled were probably incapable to let go and work together. All severely opiniated to a point, I can only imagine how these fights got underway and were somewhat impossible to resolve. So, once the chicken came to roost, it is only logical that Dio had to leave – or else.

But there was more. True shenanigans!

The main reason hinted back in time were rumors about mixing and remixing schemes of pre-produced tracks, the unauthorized kind in cloak-and-dagger actions during foggy nights. Of course, one party accused and the other denied, what have you. So, by and large it was an unhappy departure. This is all a long time past and water well under the bridge as we say. And whatever it was, we ended up with a new stellar player in the metal universe. Very interestingly, the new band Dio emerged this same year and – lo and behold – their first album Holy Diver appeared shortly thereafter in 1983. Quite a feat following such a hasty departure.  [...]  Got hooked?
