Nothing and nobody has been able to really copy that typical Insomnium style. Nor should anybody, right? This muted cathedral sound, spiked with discreet symphonic elements. All of this usually delivers on smoothly flowing, soaring guitars – three of them actually – and Niilo Sevänen‘s stately growls. Plus a few cleans, just for spice.

We were already quite impressed with Heart Like a Grave back in 2019, a somewhat more assertive piece than the former ones. And the question is, what comes next?

I don’t like tech death very much, I don’t like the mayhem it creates, and I don’t like the lack of coherence it usually engenders. Good dissonance is distinctly different and just screaming your way through a complicated mush of styles often leaves many of these bands on the road to perdition. A desolate place where only an imbibed few will utter the praise they crave.

The German band Varg seems to hit a great many raw nerves around the metal community. The grievances are legion and range from unease about style to outright, virulent hatred.

As to the RMR crew, Varg never quite connected with our inner self to this day. We – indeed – stumbled across their wares in the past, but the love never generated that urge to write a review. Or any other article about that band for that matter.
