We were looking for a record so out-of-the-box, it would not fit anywhere. No band enjoying the safe harbor of their chosen style would qualify for that, of course. But an outfit sailing out there in the murky depths of yonder mists. A place where the music defines the direction, not the confines of a style. And that is when that cover of white-clad figures on a stormy beach caught our attention.

Ah, damn. Let’s give in and do another one of them 2019 records. Maybe because there’s a sphinx on the cover, and it’s a scary beast. So, we better be nice, right?

Alcest‘s newest album Spiritual Instinct was one of those few albums that created a consistent background chatter late last year. With a lot of diehard protagonists swooning over the record as if the second coming just happened.

Will the metal fan crowd still find Gothic Metal bands out there worth their salt? A difficult proposition at best. Because we have heard and seen it all.

Or have we?

And – more importantly – there is no such thing as typical Gothic Metal. The genre more describes a trend and serves as a recipient for a hodgepodge of different styles and variations. Much like other genres.

The RMR crew gets a great many review requests of all sorts – every friggin’ day. This means that our pipeline is always desperately overflowing and it is just not physically possible to look at all of that goodness.
