We do like them sturdy and unhinged over here. Bands that refuse classification and drive a pig-headed approach to their music. So far out in the left field that rock radio doesn’t want to find them. Dawnwalker is one of those. Already their last record Ages got us confused at first. But – in the end – it all made some disturbing sense. So, in this unholy year of the Dark Lord 2022, House of Sand spills forth. An equally stubborn offering. And that’s a fascinating prospect. Or is it?

I’ll be damned. A version of Sidus Atrum of the afterlife with a few squirts of Final Coil’s latest EP just appeared on the RMR review pipe. And that’s something we’ve trouble resisting. Besides, the RMR crew likes nothing more than extracting a totally unknown band from that smelly swamp full of rocky and weedy metallic objects. Up and into the light, so they may shine by themselves and either disintegrate or move on to greater things beyond this ‘zine’s measly reach.

When Darkher hit our turntables back in 2016, the RMR deckhands – at first – thought that this would be some trve competition to Extreme Metal acts like Myrkur. But Realms turned out to be more Loreena McKennit than it would ever hit Amalie Bruun’s backyard.

And whilst that may be so, her depiction of frugal dark and subdued doom continued to fascinate us. Her minimalistic streak, those carefully crafted blurbs of tasty doom stuck with us like some ice-cold and wet power glue to our skin.

As always, the time must be right to write reviews. The writing process of such a recension is as much an artistic process as it is for a music album. Well, maybe not quite that elaborate, but you get my drift.

So, at the beginning of the terrible year of the Dark Lord 2022, XCIII‘s1 newest offering Void just did not talk to us. Impossible to wrap our minds around something so avant-garde, it just wouldn’t fit the RMR crew’s Extreme Metal damaged brains of mid-January.
