Whoops! Is it mid-2018 yet? It is. And thus high time to take stock again of records that excited us at RockmusicRaider since Tome VI appeared on the screens of our esteemed fans. Meantime, the deck crew issued a new Top 10 for 2017 and hammered out yet another edition of the Old’n’Tasty series.

Now, these intermittent digests are surely no top 10 list. But some of those albums might very well end up in a hall of fame or two. And the harvest of records to date is certainly surprisingly eclectic.

Some voices out there declare that only new – as in brand new – records can get a review. To go back and contemplate good ol’ tunes from the past is forbidden devilry. To be squished quickly, blown to smithereens with this mighty Thor’s hammer surely in their possession.

And you know what? From a click rate or sharing standpoint, this is absolutely correct. But RMR likes to do things a bit differently sometimes and break stuff if need be.

It is interesting how fantasy novels draw Black Metal acts to them. Yet in truth, the tune they play is no ‘proper’ Black Metal anymore, if there ever was such a thing.

Their theme morphed into some type of a sub-genre already some time ago. It remains blackened in a way but definitely boasts that standalone, plasticky sound that fans will appreciate. A fantasy-laden musical landscape that these backyard studio metal bands exploit. And produce some sort of an over-exaggerated synthesizer-driven and almost artificial sound, decorated in dry, heaving rasps that became their trademark over the years.

If you visit a restaurant a number of times and you always find the same menu card, you will finally give up on them. And you’ll end up looking for places, where the food is equally good (or better), but the variation more stringent. 

The same goes with some of the metal genres that are out there.
