Wait, what? Forest Metal? We had that one already somewhere, right?

And indeed, the muddy ones from the German Black Forest – aka Finsterforst – already claimed that lofty genre. They called it Black Forest Metal. Close enough, I guess.

The slight similarities of the former’s offering with the Australian band Arbrynth‘s A Place of Buried Light made me chuckle a bit, though. Nothing to compare like for like in there, but both bands’ artistic fabric seems to be woven with a similar thread. Must truly be the trees and the Wilde Beasts.

When the RockmusicRaider blog was still kinda in search of itself, we stumbled across Arven. An almost girlie band, with Till Felden, the drummer. But it wasn’t tremendous female power that caught our attention; it was their style.

Arven boasted this eclectic mix of Gothic and symphonically tainted, folky Melodic Metal. A contribution to the metal multiverse that did not quite fit the mold – at all. And this is why the crew over here started to concentrate ever more on what this band was all about.

Will 2020 be the year of the storytellers?

We just covered Porta Nigra and their godly blackened airs early this year. Now, this time we came across Totenheer, literary specialists from Switzerland, it appears. But the theme they chose is one of those tales that I learned to appreciate over time.

Jeremias Gotthelf’s Die Schwarze Spinne (the black spider) practically lends itself to an Extreme Metal epic. Because it is a dark and evil story, seemingly written by the devil himself. As this year starts to take on steam, we truly look forward to a tear-drenched and wretched twelve months, hopefully filled with loads of Doom and Doom Death Metal of the first order. And – good news – there’s some serious action on that specific horizon.
