“I had a dream, which was not all a dream”!

Ruins of Marianas Rest starts with a monologue that moves you out into space. One that Carach Angren could not have done better. And – truly – the tune and story also keep you hostage to all sorts of horrors.

Only here, we have troubles of the mind that are at stake. Internalized terrors that somehow surface, when you least expect them. And not miscellaneous war crimes, or other horrifying dark urges.

It is true. These guys have an ego bigger than the tiny Faroe Islands, where they hail from. The swagger they deliver their fare with continues to astonish me. But what can you do, when warrior blood flows in your veins.

Right? 

Hel, the newest record of Týr, feels, as if the beer-swirling folks of Alestorm moved North, and grew some muscle and real beards. And Amon Amarth should be ashamed of themselves, they just got keelhauled by some trve Vikings. Or at least by the remnants of the descendants or something.

I just checked the YouTube echo chamber. It had to do with The Heretics of Rotting Christ, their latest 2019 full-length epic. In the midst of the fawning by the usual fanboys and girls at work, I found one guy. And he or she depicted a small file tree, where all of those tracks on this new record got classified as ‘bad songs’.

Woe, someone had the courage to enter a negative remark into the usual virulent strings of YouTube commenting prowess. Something that we do not see too often, but smartly done with a picture.
