There’s a new genre out there. Well, it is not new, at all. But it continues to gain momentum, importance, and – more importantly – general acceptance. One that is fun to listen to in a live environment. Famous for festivals and live venues in general. And it also gets you enough oomph to please in an earphone.

We’re talking about Heavy Rock and its many nuances out there. A style pretty much defined by its lava-like hotness and rough-hewn structure. I got a headache. A big one. So, time to break out that Aspirin, will ya. Or I’ll probably die from metal poisoning, or – worse – turn into a metal zombie.

And this after only one full listen of Veleno, the newest heap of mighty Death Metal from the flamboyant Italians of Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Sometimes you vow stuff. And you wish you better did not. Because vows are there to be broken. This time, the vow was about not covering any new Melodic or Symphonic Metal bands anymore. Or any other newcomer in Power Metal that somehow tries to emerge from an ocean of lookalikes. Dime-a-dozen deliveries, with an ever yesterday’s sound, rehashed all over again. Right?

Sometimes things just fit. At the time of the release of Berserker, Amon Amarth‘s 2019 epic, I was just reading the newest novel of Bernard Cornwell’s Viking series.

A perfect backdrop to a great story, whilst Johan Hegg growls about the English growing confused when faced with the berserkers of the Norse invaders. Back in time, way back in time.
