At first, this sounded like the background music at my local sushi restaurant. It really did, and it made me hungry just listening to that stuff. In other words, Final Coil‘s Somnambulant II took us a moment or two to get into. But we are glad, we took the time.

One of the main challenges a metal band has in this ever-growing mass of often mediocre material is to stand out and shine. Many genres have been beaten to death so many times that any use of them will resemble that proverbial dead horse. It’s a conundrum of sorts that some manage well – and others less so.

The days are getting colder and darker and the old homestead is rattling with the cold winds from the North. So, you build that fire and try to settle down. Only, metal doesn’t fit too well right now. Instead, a good piece of Folk would be truly appreciated. RMR just enjoyed a modern-day Atmospheric Black Metal record. A brand of atmoblack without the smelly shrouds of the dreaded underground. Artfully filthy1, with soaring melodies, and a pint or two of sorrow. And, of course, all technically outstanding with nary a perfectly styled hair out of place.

Yet, there are times when a spiffy production isn’t what our dark souls crave. Instead, we yearn for that fearsome grime and grit.
