A few months after the RockmusicRaider blog really took off, Draconian‘s Sovran happened. This is probably THE record that shaped our take on Doom and Gothic Metal in any significant way. And way more than their famous brethren Paradise Lost or My Dying Bride ever would.

Chiefly, Sovran impressed us with this sludgy heaviness. This sepulchral march towards the ultimate state of sadness. Something that immediately connects with your inner sorrow. The Reticent likes themes. Big, thorny themes. And even larger emotions, about problems and issues that not many musicians like to tackle.

After all, there’s no mainstream or glittery fame to gain in all this. No snazzy rockstar perks beckon you just around the corner. Just hard, emotionally draining music creation that peddles to a decidedly limited audience.

Sometimes these metal-coated ears of the RMR deck crew need a reprieve. A more melodic approach to things will be in order. And if there is some cheese to go with that, then so be it. It will be like some sort of a gooey bandaid, a bit sticky but part of the soundscape.

I still remember the enraged and menacing bear-like creature on Myrrys‘ front cover. It exudes this mystical and inhuman furor, as it should. And by doing so, the beast really gives you a hint of the type of metal heading your way.

And truly, Noumena, right off the bat, surged forward with those oddly comfortable growls on a rock-solid and totally cohesive piece of Melodic Death Metal. This whole record oozed that sense of purpose, a march forward to some sort of a final goal.
