Ah, yes. The Hour of the Wolf, or more precisely, The Wolf’s Hour. Did Ereb Altor here decide to name their newest record after a ’68 horror film by Ingmar Bergman? Maybe so, or perhaps not. Well, whatever it may be, Vargtimman feels like a logical progression to its predecessor Järtecken.

The latter already sported material that was less focused on the age-old Bathory material. And it drifted more towards a somewhat atmospheric arena, away from the austere origins of the band.

I am mad today. Black, raging mad. Eyes turning dark and glowing, horns growing on my front kind of mad. A real cosmic rage of epic proportions is roaring through my dark veins.  

So, what better time to violate a few principles? Even if the mighty god of blogging sez that thou shalt not turn against his Sacred Rulez. Hoots! So, the first one stipulates that you should not review records older than a few months. And for sure not those of last year.

Some bands bury themselves so far underground, it is amazing that we can actually find them. You need to be a tunnel rat for Norad to unearth them, though. And still, you will be able to find them only with some sort of nuclear-powered detection device. Or else they will just dig down further, like some giant metal mole in a cosmic rage.

A myriad of Black Metal outfits have already tried this hide-and-seek approach, wearing masks and threatening everybody and sundry with the Dark Lord, should they try to uncover their identity. But seldom have we come across a … [...] Click to raid more!

You surely remember one Tomas Börje Forsberg. This is at least how he called himself back in time. Forsberg was more famously known by the moniker Quorthon, and as the founder of the Black Metal turned Viking Metal band Bathory. This band released some truly mysterious and electrifying stuff back in their time. Until their leader’s demise in 2004 at the age of 39 years put a brutal stop to things, that is.
