You have records that follow you around like some sort of a ghost. They lurk in the background, hide in the corners of your auditory senses. With a sound that is kinda good, but not really good.

Sturdy metal that should warrant your attention, but then again doesn’t captivate. Because the vile mainstream raises its ugly head each time you pick up the record, out of a morass of same, same but different. Butch Balich was really productive in 2017. First, he managed to get on the RockmusicRaider radar with his Arduini/Balich act. And this one got a pretty good reception already. But – of course – Dawn of Ages was a side project of his, as we all know.

A somewhat subtle hype was discernible lately in the closed confines of the Black Metal fan crowd. Like the odors of a black mass on the breeze, wafting through the morbid realms of a lonesome and foggy cemetery.

A subtle wave of expectation that went on for a while. But now they are here: After some two years of wait, the German band Thormesis released their newest and fifth full-length album Trümmerfarben. Of course, expectations were high after their last offering Freier Wille – Freier Geist.
