Newsflash: The Maere riding Eschatos!

RockmusicRaider Newsflash - Eschatos - Maere - Album CoverA few weeks ago RockmusicRaider covered Parodos, a New Age Black Metal outfit from Italy. Their unusual offering to the Dark Lord was already way off the beaten path as Black Metal goes. This is pretty good, they said. And it might not get much better, they said. Yet, they were wrong, so wrong.

Because for today’s dose of daily metal, I will propose a juicy mix between the earlier concoctions of Myrkur and a mad-scientist version of the German Todtgelichter. The Latvian outfit Eschatos and their newest EP Maere will fit that description. And indeed they boast a style much more experimental than their Italian brethren ever demonstrated so far. The band’s approach is not only Post or New Age Black Metal. They throw all sorts of flavors into their toxic potion. From Folk Metal to Pagan, Industrial over Death to Atmospheric Metal. This decidedly short blurb sports some disturbingly tight ice-cold metal. Of an exquisite intensity that few know how to create.

But first and foremost, the EP conveys an atmosphere of desolation and despair. Exactly the way a good Maere is supposed to act riding your chest at night. So, if you are into Extreme Metal, I guarantee that this spicy jambalaya of soundbites will make you go for more.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Dodecahedron – Kwintessens (2017) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Dodecahedron - Kwintessens - Album CoverSomething creates dark, foreboding atmospheres. Cold empty spaces filled with noisy dissonance to chill your soul with frozen hydrogen. And no doubt you need this type of a wall of sound if a record takes off with something called The Culling of the Unwanted of the Earth. Equally if the main actor goes by the name of ‘The Entity’. By Loki!

Dark and grey, a landscape of bleak winds howling through the low-lying mists. The mists that just about hide the sharp-toothed monsters within. Well, hells bells, quite a piece of work, now ain’t it? In truth Kwintessens of Dodecahedron got dissed swiftly and banned to a far corner of the RMR offices for a few months. The crime? Exaggerated dissonance at an unknown scale. Only to come back to haunt us these dark days of the unholy year of 2017. Because it finally dawned on the RMR crew that this record is indeed worth the waste of a few drops of (very) black ink. And fuck you, band, now you made RMR listen to sick shit like Deathspell Omega and Akhlys all over again. Only yours is so much better. Well, go figure – I thought the latter were good already.

Kwintessens – the band’s sophomore album – will try to drive you insane straight from note numba one. The record displays this type of geekery that usually will get the band and their unholy production thrown out of the room and swiftly deleted from any and all sound devices. But then again, this is a visceral record. The THING that talks to the darkest abode of your dying soul. And it is this dark thing in all of its terror-laden splendor that lets you plod on with the record. The story those lyrics tell fits with the music perfectly too – and it is equally dark and foreboding.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

RockmusicRaider Newsflash - Cycloscopia - Immured - Album CoverSometimes alternative universes show up in the RockmusicRaider review pipeline that persist. And continue to haunt you throughout your day until you give in and write about it. The band Cyclocosmia in all its spidery glory is one of those. They just unleashed their latest EP Immured this January 2017.

And theirs is a captivating tune. They mix the weirdness of Todtgelichter with the serenity of Darkher with astonishing ease. As with the latter, the questions poses itself if Immured should qualify as metal or not. And again as before, the band gets this metal tinge out into the open that even warms this metalhead’s steely heart.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!
