Ah, the folks with the astro-tongues are on the prowl again with All the Rage, their newest video.1 But this time, they move away from the land of the weird straight into – blasphemy and inquisition. A soundscape that the underground extremists of metal like to occupy. Or – failing that – the surface skimmers of the lore of satan and other juicy arcane bits. But those are just for show, ain’t they?

I am fascinated by Jupiter Hollow‘s video clip called Solar Gift that somehow strayed off their 2020 record Bereavement and found its way onto our huge video screen. But we weren’t dazzled by outstanding cinematographic craftsmanship, far from it.

The video itself feels like one of those Covid live sessions, shot in a studio on a ubiquitous band action setting. So, nothing really to write home about from that angle. Not that those videos are bad, we enjoyed a few cool ones over the last year or so. And perhaps too many.

I’ll be damned.

It’s astonishing what havoc a simple departure from Eluveitie can wreak. Yep, this is about Anna Murphy and her merry men who defected from the aforementioned band to found Cellar Darling in 2016. But this particular outfit never quite made it onto our radar for some reason.

Yet now, the band’s latest clip Dance finally scored a hit, and big time. Their newest concoction is quite a piece of work. And – I daresay – with a style that is pretty far removed from the pagan lore they pushed before.

The Conjurer, by Insomnium. Winter melancholy!

Nothing and nobody has been able to really copy that typical Insomnium style. Nor should anybody, right? This muted cathedral sound, spiked with discreet symphonic elements. All of this usually delivers on smoothly flowing, soaring guitars – three of them actually – and Niilo Sevänen‘s stately growls. Plus a few cleans, just for spice.

We were already quite impressed with Heart Like a Grave back in 2019, a somewhat more assertive piece than the former ones. And the question is, what comes next?
