Picture this: The genteel nation of Cyprus. Loads of Souvlaki, Tzatziki, Mediterranean Salad, and some local wine on the side. Lazy drives around the countryside with visits to beaches and places unknown. Boat rides and snorkeling tours. Nice, gentle music, warm winds caressing your skin. Drinks at the bar with sunburned friends, hot chicks, and all. Well, there you go, Liber Sum (I am free in Latin), you will think.

Sound good? Vacation needed? Liber Sum?

And now this: Harsh, pitiless metal sounds assaulting my ears out of my headphones, no clean singing allowed. Genteel little nation in the midst of the ocean? Nope. Come again!

For those who think that The Plague Within of Paradise Lost has been the absolute best of our Year of the Lord 2015, think again. My Dying Bride just cut you loose, adrift in an ocean of pain, just Feel the Misery!

I know one should not give the boat away and show yer mighty colors too soon, but this mixture between Paradise Lost, Sorcerer, and My Silent Wake is just irresistible. Yo, Baby, where u been all my life? 

A crystal clear mix of Heavy and Doom Metal pours out of my earphones and just startled me awake. Oscillating between these two styles, but leaning more towards the doomy mix of nuts served with this Metal Long Island Ice Tea. 

A long time in the making, the new album In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross of the Swedish Metal Band Sorcerer is like a bunch of vitamins to a somewhat neglected field of this metal universe. Dark, magical, stepping right out of the mists of the treacherous moor onto the stage.

Now, step back a minute.

We have drum blasts, distorted guitars, and a female front. All check! But only one female this time? Here’s some confusion indeed! Symphonic influence – check! But the record is for sure not your usual piece of Symphonic Metal.

The Austrian band Illuminata hail from the beautiful city of Graz. You know the one with the funky Kunsthaus and clock tower. And I am floored. Their 2015 album Where Stories Unfold departs in a completely different direction than their last record.
