2015 Top 10 Records

RockmusicRaider Review - Amalie Bruun - GuitarThe first full year for RockmusicRaider went by and a great many records were reviewed. A wild ride it was and still is, with challenges galore, some overcome and some still lurking nearby. This list covers records that got released in 2015. And who would have thought that the black section of #metal would be getting such attention during this year. Certainly not me. I am looking forward to a even more eventful 2016 and the pipeline does look pretty much filled already – but this is only the beginning.

So, let’s step right in:

RockmusicRaider’s Intermittent Best of… Tome I – The first few Months!

cool-guitarWell, hells bells! This was quite a run from no website a few months ago to a blog that starts to pay off to some very, very limited fame. Still going strong, writing reviews left, right and center – investing what little time my already busy schedule leaves me.

The first review that started me off was ‘Hydra‘ from Within Temptation – frankly not the best these guys ever produced – a friggin’ attempt to get into mainstream. A pity if you think that they produced stellar stuff before, real pearls like ‘Enter‘ or ‘The Silent Force’, which still send shivers down my spine for some of them tracks in there.Got hooked? Illuminata – Where Stories Unfold (2015) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Illuminata - Where Stories Unfold - Album CoverNow wait a minute: We have drumblasts – check! We have distorted guitars – check! We have a female front – check! Ah, only one? Confused! Symphonic influence – check! So, this must be Gothic Metal – NOPE! Well, kind of nope. It does have all of the trappings of a metal record, but it is for sure not your usual piece of Symphonic Metal.

The Austrian band Illuminata hail from the beautiful city of Graz. You know the one with the funky Kunsthaus and clock tower. And I am floored. Their 2015 album Where Stories Unfold departs to a completely different direction than their last record. When I started on this album, I stopped dead in my tracks: Gone was the rocky and straightforward style, kind of leaning into Within Temptation.Got hooked? Raid this some more...

Illuminata – A World So Cold (2011) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Illuminata - A World So Cold - Album CoverI have no idea where all these mediocre reviews come from I tortured myself reading. And why the fuck I did this to myself is beyond me. The 2011 album A World So Cold from the Austrian band Illuminata is simply refreshing. Perhaps apart from the bodged intro that just wants to make you scream and kick the walls, that is.

Pure Symphonic Metal of the Gothic kind, best described as  Within Temptation with an edge, mixed with some Xandria style elements. Add a hint of Nightwish to this medley and it will put a smile on your face. With just enough bombast to avoid disturbing my metal feelings too much.Got hooked? Raid this some more...
