Should I tell you a dirty, truly geeky secret? I kinda got a kick out of the Mad Max themed video Unleash The Archers released with their 2015 screamo Time Stands Still. Even if I just could not really get warm with this particular record in general. The yodeling and aimless speed crimes were just too bad.

First, you get the purists out there. The ones with a good tune, but absolutely no willingness or know-how to market themselves. This is sometimes borne from the need to bury themselves deep underground, idealistic purposes, or straight lackadaisical laziness.

Then you often hear: ‘I entered the mainstream’. Proudly pronounced by folks happy to be with everybody else. The ones that will hit all the levers the music industry has to offer. And go with the motions to be visible and sell their fares. Which is great, but usually boring.

A variety of currents and undercurrents exist in the Progressive Metal universe. You get the thoughtful ones, those hauling emotion around like a shitload of bricks. The Reticent comes to mind. You have the experimental dudes like Wilderun, walking down the steps, towards alternative and avant-garde laden pastures.

And then you get the djent division.

Those who think that good prog inevitably must be stuffed with a goodly measure of djentability. Leprous or Vvon Dogma I are somewhat of an extremist example of those. And you’ll find many others of the same ilk, and their ardent supporters.
