I’ll be damned.

It’s astonishing what havoc a simple departure from Eluveitie can wreak. Yep, this is about Anna Murphy and her merry men who defected from the aforementioned band to found Cellar Darling in 2016. But this particular outfit never quite made it onto our radar for some reason.

Yet now, the band’s latest clip Dance finally scored a hit, and big time. Their newest concoction is quite a piece of work. And – I daresay – with a style that is pretty far removed from the pagan lore they pushed before.

Sometimes I am not sure what makes me turn towards an album. It may be a random choice. Or – at times – the record will choose you – sort of. As in, you kinda fancy the beat, and next thing you know, you just listened to this thing for 30 minutes or so. In other words, the beat just got the better of you with some sort of metallic zen and a hefty dose of rocky hypnosis. The ultimate sales pitch of an album review promo. That kind of thing.

Times change, don’t they? The musical landscape and – indeed – the music industry were completely different some 20 years ago. Then the friggin’ bandits from the old Napster arrived, and everything took a tumble.

The same goes for Evanescence. They airdropped onto the Nu Metal1 scene as a Goth’s wet dream with Fallen in 2003. And this catapulted Amy Lee and her stellar voice to instant stardom. Then, she and her buddy separated, and The Open Door released without her copilot. And that’s where the first cracks already appeared in that dark yet shiny armor.

Zeit are very angry, furious actually. That’s why they decided to slam an EP onto the music market that is – for now – seriously hampered by the current pandemic. And indeed, they hail from Germany where the restrictions are especially harsh these days.
