Do you know why the RMR deckhands endlessly return to metal? It’s because of the outstanding technical skills of those musicians involved. In this day and age, only this almost otherworldly sorcery on display today will really get a band anywhere. That is not to belittle other music genres, but I truly never saw this excellence thing pushed to such extremes.

This is one of those records. You commence on them with no major expectations. But then, this thing starts to fascinate you. And you didn’t expect to waste quite so much time on its innards. But there you are, headphones glued to yer head despite yerself.

In other words, the reviewer’s mighty crystal ball usually won’t work out as expected.1 Because you’ll only find out what’s really in it, once you let ‘yet another metal piece’ roar out of your music machine.

Slania, Slania! Voice of a distant past. Ode to Helvetian and Celtic times, when the tribes ruled. As far as they could until the Romans arrived and made a mess out of it.

Yet perhaps, this may be a tad too much glorification of a time historians hardly know about. When tribes (supposedly) ruled on the land today called Switzerland. A story about people long gone and dead. And we don’t even know if they ever existed in the way imagined. It only appears that the Romans did have a few difficulties conquering these people. The 2010 studio album Everything Remains (As it Never Was) from the Swiss Pagan Metal band Eluveitie clearly proved to be an improvement over the already pretty good former production Slania. And yes, I know, there was Evocation I in between. But this one doesn’t really count, it’s an unplugged piece far away from metal.
