The German band Varg seems to hit a great many raw nerves around the metal community. The grievances are legion and range from unease about style to outright, virulent hatred.

As to the RMR crew, Varg never quite connected with our inner self to this day. We – indeed – stumbled across their wares in the past, but the love never generated that urge to write a review. Or any other article about that band for that matter.

Who would have thought that the RMR crew will cover the German metal band Varg one day? The ones from Bavaria, by the way. So, this is neither about their namesake from Freiburg nor about one Louis Cachet1 and his misdeeds in infamy.

Often caught in a whirlpool of some strange meandering brand of Metalcore2, Varg‘s former offerings never quite managed to convince the RMR crew. Aw, Njord have merci on my blackened cold metal soul. I just listened a few times to the Curse of the Crystal Coconut, Alestorm‘s latest bag of goodies. And now my head is spinning.

Well, our famous Scottish pirates are at it again, ever questing about the wide-open seas as swiftly as the fair winds allow. Albeit that a few signs of aging become all but too apparent throughout the record.

I got a kick out of this. To hear Chloe Bray wail away on The Monolith like some weird mixture of Amalie Bruun and an early version of Sharon den Adel just made my day. Only, the RMR deck crew somehow feared that she would also do the dirty and scream away like Myrkur in her early days.

But never fear, this is indeed Sojourner. So, no mad screaming on this record to ruin the mighty atmospheric impression in one go. If anything you get Azathoth’s mad piping, which perfectly fits their lay of the land. In other words, … [...] Click to raid more!
