RockmusicRaider Review - Arrayan Path - Dawn of Aquarius - Album CoverMany a metal wizard is already active in the Power Metal arena with many more trying to get a foothold in a very crowded genre. And this breeds uniformity, which – by definition – shuns progression and evolution to anything new. Methinks that the ‘typical’ sound and style now ingrained themselves into the minds of fans and pros alike. So much so that a certain expectancy arose with the fan community as to how Power Metal ought to sound. Known values are good for the soul, are they not?

So to avoid to swim up mainstream creek without a paddle, bands need to make an extra effort to be heard. To the point that some of them drive themselves to extremes to get there. Gloryhammer in space, anyone? Or they Unleash The Archers and play Mad Max in a desert. So in other words, many bands resort to exuberance and flamboyance to stand out from the mean crowd that continues to almost religiously stir the stale brand of pottage Power Metal has often become.  [...]  Got hooked? RockmusicRaider Review - Overtures - Artifacts - Album CoverLooks like the Mediterranean is a fertile ground when it comes to #metal of all kinds. You got the island folks on Cyprus going strong, at least one very good one dwelling in Portugal, but then there is a very important community down South in Italy too. Overtures being one of them and they are rocking away from Gorizia, right on the border with Slovenia. The band is now ready to open the doors on their newest and third full length studio album Artifacts. To me this is – not quite surprisingly – about the most mature album they produced so far.

And does Artifacts deliver?

It does for sure not saddle us with a helluva lot of novelty at first, but the question here is more: Will the album stick out from the crowd? And it does. They got their own brand cut out for them and this indeed will make all the difference, together with a very powerful crunch throughout the album. This creates this pull that will keep you on the record. The band blatantly mixes melodic Prog with Power Metal, injecting some Gothic Metal to boot. Best described as something like Nightwish meeting Arrayan Path with a stout handful of AvantasiaGot the general idea where this is going? ‘Cause on top of their very own style mix, the album has this tendency to go bombastic on ye. Okay, I give it to them: They keep it in check pretty well – luckily. And some cheese makes its appearance too, but more to that later.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Intermittent Digest – Tome III

RockmusicRaider - Intermittent Digest - Tome IIIHowdy, fans and friends! Months have passed again way too fast since the last point of the situation (as we say in French) and already it is time to halt the horses again and take stock. The first full year @ RockmusicRaider – 2015 – has passed and we start to approach mid-year 2016. By Loki, things are moving fast and I am not getting younger. So, what happened since Tome II. I can say one thing: Dark, dark is the going, when the going gets tough.

Felt waves of Black or blackened Metal are coming our way. I am amazed – seems to be a sign of the times. Rorcal Creon Album coverJust check out Rorcal with κρέων (Creon) that visited the RockmusicRaider site real brutally. Those tracks left blood on the walls and streaks on the ground, echoing around the corridors even when the music was turned off. At the end of the day, all this Black Metal dissonance turned out to be a historical theme park of sorts. If this is possible at all. What really threw me is the fact that they somehow dwell on the wrong side of Geneva in Switzerland. For those knowing the city a somewhat difficult concept to comprehend.

Then late in 2015, we found an unknown band on our promo list called Batushka with Litourgyia. Blasphemous bastards taking on the orthodox church in a way that just reduced me to aRockmusicRaider Review - Batushka - Litourgyia - Album Cover helpless heap of mirth. And they promptly made it on the 2015 Top Ten Records of the RockmusicRaider blog. THIS is Black Metal the way it is supposed to be played. Trademark anonymity and all to boot – to this day nobody knows who they are really. This record is still and often played on the mighty RockmusicRaider Media Machine. Keep going guys, this is just good stuff. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!
