By the end of 2022, the RMR reviewers realized that Xaon‘s latest record – The Lethean – never quite made it onto our swampy review pipe. And in truth, what record in its right state would want to dwell in that steamy sump just to be lost forever, right? So, with enough material to last a lifetime, we concocted the 2022 top ten list, sadly without Carson’s boyz.

RMR is rummaging about the metal underground yet again. And I mean some hardcore underground. Félonie‘s the name and De Sève et de Sang1 the game. Created by a one-man show that currently only sports a sparse number of followers on the band’s Facebook page and not much social media coverage at the time of writing this piece.

Cinematic Metal. The dream of shaving off a tasty slice of Hollywood without being there. And – by definition – only in sound and never in deed. Clad in metal that somehow and apparently must sound epic and be smothered in sweetish cheese.

Bands like AfterTime or – again – Illuminata come to mind. And for a while, it is nice to listen to those compositions that all kinda sound alike. But then suddenly this deluge of fondue does get to you. And you start to yearn for something a bit rougher.

The wicked prophet is loose with his donkey again, facing the sword-wielding angel! Or something of that nature. And in Switzerland to boot.

If an EP serves – as the lore goes – to show the skills of a band in their early days, then the Swiss band Xaon hit dead center with their upcoming, self-released album Face of Balaam. Expecting some watery metal concoction, I was stopped dead in my tracks by this tsunami rolling over me. And by Loki, these guys serve an intense and aggressive brand of their favorite metal.
